Dear SVMA Member,
We have just returned from current president Michael Anderson’s amazing summer meeting in the Oregon Umpqua forest. There will be plenty of stories and fishing tales to share with other SVMA’ers during our ski trip to Sun Peak Canada this year. We believe the summer meeting participants set the record for the most SVMA members overboard at one time on a rafting trip!
Ginny and I apologize for sneaking in on Michael’s year but we have to announce and begin booking our summer trip in order to guarantee lodging to this popular location. We are very excited to be leading the group to a fun filled week in the sun in Key West, Florida. We’ll be diving on the Vandenberg wreck and the best reefs in the US. We’ll sail out over the tropical seas on a romantic evening cruise on the clear blue waters.
Duval Street is where all the bar and shopping action is and we are a block away. Have a wonderful seafood dinner or enjoy the bar at Sloppy Joe’s. Or head over to Margaritaville and try a Margarita and a Cheeseburger in Paradise. Mallory Square is a daily homage to the sunset. Come join the fun and watch the Cat Man and his circus cats perform.
Key West is a living museum. The Hemingway House is an exploration of one of the great literary talents America has seen. The Hemingway, polydactyl cat colony is a small bonus for us. The docks and seas around town are filled with reminders of the maritime past that kept Key West alive and growing as a source of seafood and commerce. The Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson are a historical site where the US had its southernmost military outpost. The reefs and birdwatching are spectacular. The snorkeling is impressive but is accessible for all levels of expertise.
For any members with an interest in marine turtles a trip to the Marathon Turtle Hospital is a fun and educational trip. You will see the work done to help care for and save marine turtles. The ride up US 1 to the Turtle Hospital is a gorgeous ride highlighted by traversing the Seven Mile Bridge. You’ll learn the history of the tragic attempts to build a railway to Key West and the history of the highway you are on and the old one you can see alongside.
We are staying in the Simonton Court in the heart of downtown. There are a variety of room configurations available. The inn is a small oasis of tropical flowers and shade. There are 4 pools intimately sited among the 30 rooms. Each day breakfast is served by the pool. The location is convenient to all of downtown Key West.
We are attaching a flyer with all the lodging details for the trip. Key West is a popular destination and the Simonton will book up quickly. Please check out the flyer and if you are interested call our travel agent Kay Coffey right away and reserve your lodging. Activity information and registration for group activities will be sent to you as the planning progresses.
